Abstract

Glomerulonephritis is a renal disease in which immune-mediated glomerular damage is
the initiating factor. The hallmark of glomerulonephritis is increased permeability of the glomerular
barrier. Proliferative glomerulonephritis is characterized by proliferation of the mesangial cells with an
influx of inflammatory cells. Membranous glomerulonephritis is characterized by accumulation of
matrix and thickening of the glomerular basement membrane (GBM) and capillary wall.
