This paper examined the benefits of academic staff training in tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The paper also critically looked at the various problems militating against effective academic staff training in tertiary institutions in Nigeria. Employing secondary data that were sourced from print resources and online resources the paper established that academic staff training has the capacity to improve academic staff teaching, researching and community services provision skills in the tertiary institutions. The paper also indicates that academic staff training improves academic staff job performance in the tertiary institutions in Nigeria. Shortage of funds, corruption and abscondment of academic staff, strike actions and poor retirement from institutions were identified as problems facing academic staff training programme in the Nigerian tertiary institutions. Based on these finding, the paper hereby recommends that government should increase the funding of academic staff training programme in the Nigerian tertiary institutions. Effective monitoring and evaluation system should be put in place to curtain the corruption in the management of training funds. Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) should constantly organize training for tertiary institutions administrators on proper ways to retire their training expenditures.
