Jharkhand, despite its rich agrarian base and abundant natural resources, continues to experience persistent agricultural underperformance driven by minimal post-harvest infrastructure, limited market linkages, and inadequate adoption of agro-processing technologies. This study investigates the transformative potential of agro-processing and value addition as twin levers for sustainable agricultural development across the state. Employing a mixed-method framework combining primary survey data from 412 farm households across six districts and secondary data sourced from the Directorate of Horticulture, NABARD, and the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO), this research identifies critical gaps in the existing agro-processing ecosystem and maps spatial clusters of agroindustrial opportunity. The findings reveal that value addition across six major commodity chains—rice, lac, spices, horticulture, oilseeds, and dairy—could raise farmer net income by an average of 42.6% relative to current farm-gate earnings. The study documents that only 18.3% of agricultural produce currently undergoes any form of processing before reaching final markets. Policy simulations suggest that targeted public investment in Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), cold-chain infrastructure, and skill development could generate over 85,000 new rural livelihoods by 2030. The paper concludes with a strategic roadmap for policymakers, agribusiness investors, and development practitioners to leverage Jharkhand's untapped agro-processing potential.
